ETF Selection Criteria
How are ETFs selected for inclusion in the Digest?
We continually monitor new Exchange Traded Funds and important indices for inclusion in the Digest, and we add trading programs only when certain threshold requirements are met.
For ETF's, our criteria are the following:
- Based on trading volume and experienced observation, can we determine that the index linked to an ETF represents an important market to most investors?
- Can we access the data necessary to back-test the ETF's index? (Some ETF's are linked to proprietary indices that do not release this information to the public.)
- Does our back-testing indicate that the index works well with our trading system?
We may offer signals for important indices that do not yet have ETF's, if back-testing shows that our methods will be effective. In these cases we are anticipating that suitable ETF's will be introduced.
On rare occasions we find "proxies" that allow subscribers to reasonably match an index without an ETF. Such is the case with closed-end funds TRF (Templeton Russia Fund), IFN (India Fund), and Profund's Rising Dollar Fund (RDPIX) and Falling Dollar Fund (FDPIX).
